#MiniAbe Visits the Chicago Southland Leave a comment
Have you seen Abe Lincoln lately? No Seriously! Well, he’s back only this time he is in miniature form. You can catch him zip lining over the Shawnee Bluffs, cruising Route 66 or stepping out on The Ledge at Skydeck Chicago as part of Enjoy Illinois’ latest serious of videos. Mini Abe is an adventurer that loves to travel and share his experiences as he journeys through the Land of Lincoln.
The folks at the Illinois Office of Tourism decided to send Mini Abe on adventures with the convention and visitors bureaus throughout Illinois and the Chicago Southland CVB was lucky enough to be the first to take Mini Abe on a tour of the region.
With so much to do, we had a hard time deciding where to take him. However, we knew it was going to be a memorable experience when Mini Abe propped himself right on the counter and began telling the CVB’s CEO/President, Jim Garrett, all about his musings.
Our first stop was at Brookfield Zoo where mini Abe sat on the ledge of the famous lion statue and had a close encounter with a Raptor at Dinosaurs Alive! The fun didn’t stop there, Mini Abe checked out Toyota Park in Bridgeview where he got the chance to sit on a piece of the original Section 8, kicked a ball around in the pitch and even got to touch the Chicago Fire’s MLS Cup!
Kicking around a ball that was twice his size made for a large appetite, so Mini Abe was off to Chuck’s Southern Comfort Café in Burbank for a taste of the south and one of Chuck’s famous slow-cooked smoked BBQ beef brisket sandwiches. After lunch, Mini Abe felt like having a spot of tea and what better place than at the Pickwick Society Tea Room, Gifts & Antiques in Frankfort. We even had a surprise visit from Mary Todd who sat and chatted with Mr. Lincoln about the good ‘ole days.
At Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park in University Park, Mini Abe had a taste of nostalgia as he stood in the House Divided by artist Bruce Nauman and compared shoe sizes with “Paul.”
We stopped at Tin Fish in Tinley Park where Abe had a lesson about oysters courtesy of owner Curtis Wierbicki who was more than happy to accommodate!
What kind of tour happens in the Chicago Southland without a visit to Balmoral Park Race Track? Even though Old Bob couldn’t be there, Mini Abe was thrilled to take a spin in the start car and witness a race first hand.
Taking Mini Abe on a tour of the Chicago Southland was definitely an experience to remember. We’ll see you again soon Mini Abe!
