Baby Animal Alerts!

Gorilla Baby at Tropic World – After two weeks of asking for the public’s help in naming a 4-month-old female gorilla infant at Brookfield Zoo, the Chicago Zoological Society announced the winning name: Nora, which means “honor” or “light.”  Nora was born on November 4, 2013, to 18-year-old mom Koola. Guests can see Nora and Koola and the rest of the gorilla family daily in Tropic World: Africa exhibit.

Charles Grey Seal at Pinniped Point- Nearly 3-month-old Charles Grey Seal can now be seen on exhibit at Pinniped Point in the pool closest to The Fragile Kingdom. Indoor Activities The Kids (And Parents) Will Love!

2012-10-05CMOL 13 32 27With the weather we have had lately, it might not be a bad idea to have some indoor plans made for spring break. Luckily the Chicago Southland has two fabulous Children’s Museums to choose from! With over 15 hands-on exhibits, The Children’s Museum in Oak Lawn will definitely keep the little ones occupied! KidsWork Children’s Museum in Frankfort has plenty of activities. From the game room to the pet vet; there is something to make the little ones smile! Frankfort is also home to an abundance of unique shops! Take a stroll through The Trolley Barn and then venture down Kansas and White Streets for a shopping experience you will love! We all know that shopping can make us hungry, so once you’ve shopped until you almost dropped, stop by the Pickwick Society Tea Room or White Street Café for a bite to eat!

Soak Up Some Sunshine!

Feeling outdoorsy? Spend the day at one of the many nature centers or trails in the region!
2013_0830_LakeKatherine_WaterfallLake Katherine Nature Center & Botanic Gardens: 85-acre park that includes woodlands, prairie, wetlands, and a 10-acre lake. An estimated 100,000 people come to the park each year to hike or jog along the trails, canoe or kayak on the lake, attend a special event or educational program, or simply enjoy the beauty of the gardens and the abundant opportunities to see wildlife.
Sand Ridge Nature Center: 2013_Region 6_Little Red Schoolhouse_Earth Day Event_53Discover exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the Calumet region. You’ll find native wildlife including birds of prey, snakes, turtles, and fish, and a Kid’s Corner with hands-on activities. You can watch bird feeders from the classroom, and outside stroll through a colorful butterfly garden, and enjoy a number of interpretive gardens. Reproduction log cabins depict the lifestyles of early 19th Century Illinois.
Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center: Explore nearly 40-acres of nature preserves are home to a diversity of wildlife and habitat types. See beautiful woods, wildflowers, birds and furry friends along the way.
Little Red Schoolhouse: Connect with the historic past of the Palos Hills. In 1886 the present building, originally located on the Black Oak Trail at old 99th Street, replaced a log cabin school. Now hikers enjoy country lanes once used by its students. In 1932 the school house was moved to Camp Kiwanis by a local resident, using only one mule and log rollers. In 1952 it was moved to its present site, and in 1955 reopened as a unique, new kind of school. In place of the three R’s, fascinating stories are told to children and grown-ups who visit here, stories about forest preserve plants and animals and the earth of which they live.

Cindy Vassell talks with travel bloggers from JustShortofCrazy.com during a tour in October.

“Cindy brings a new definition to hospitality,” said Jen Hoelzle, Director of the Illinois Office of Tourism. “She is fun, engaging and so smart with her marketing and social media. She is the perfect example of a tourism ambassador.”

“Cindy deserves this accolade because of her passion for hospitality and her commitment to building up historic downtown Frankfort as a destination,” said Jim Garrett, President/CEO of the Chicago Southland Convention & Visitors Bureau. “She has hosted several of the CVB group tour and travel media familiarization tours, and every tour participant walks away raving about Cindy and the Pickwick Tea Room.”

Vassell was nominated for the Lincoln Award by Jim Garrett, President/CEO of the Chicago Southland CVB. The Pickwick Tea Room was the CVB’s 2013 Member of the Year.

The Chicago Southland Convention & Visitors Bureau nominated Vassell along with other stars of the Chicago Southland hospitality industry. This is the first time a Chicago Southland resident has been named a finalist for this award. The Lincoln Award winners will be announced at the 2014 Governor’s Conference on Travel & Tourism Monday, February 3, 2014.

“We are delighted Cindy was named a Lincoln Award finalist,” said Jim Garrett, President/CEO of the Chicago Southland CVB. “She is an amazing supporter of tourism and is eager to volunteer when we bring in familiarization tours that in turn help bring more visitors to the Village of Frankfort and the Chicago Southland.”

What the Chicago Southland CVB submitted about Cindy Vassell to the Illinois Office of Tourism:

Cindy Vassell is the heart and soul of not only the Pickwick Society Tea Room, Gifts & Antiques, but of historic downtown Frankfort. She has worked tirelessly to rally the downtown area. In 2013, the CVB brought groups of 12 tour operators and nine travel writers that she welcomed to the Pickwick Tea Room and Frankfort working in conjunction with the village and the downtown business association. Sandwich board signs welcoming the writers created a comfortable environment that made them want to come back for more. Because of their variety of teas and outstanding personal customer service, the Pickwick stands out as the #1 rated tea room in the state of Illinois, and their clientele of the tea room runs the gamut from petite grandmothers to gnarly bikers. The Pickwick’s Timely Tea events not only offer a great tea service, but an opportunity to talk with Mrs. Lincoln, Louisa Mae Alcott or Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The Chicago Southland CVB named the tea room their 2013 Member of the Year, and the CVB is blessed to have a supporter like Cindy Vassell and the lovely ladies at the Pickwick.
