Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition Installs Mural in Mokena, Ill.   Leave a comment

The Village of Mokena unveiled its Illinois Lincoln Highway Mural shortly after 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 2nd, at 11104 Front Street, Mokena. “This mural tells a unique story in the history of the Village of Mokena,” said Mayor Joseph Werner. “The village is proud to be part of the Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition mural series, one of the largest works of public art in the country.”

The mural, whose theme was developed by members of the Mokena Area Historical Society, depicts a tractor in front of the Cooper & Hostert Garage, owned by brothers-in-law Barney Hostert and Elmer Cooper.  Beyond selling gasoline and repairing motor vehicles, the garage was the first Ford Agency in the area to sell Ford cars, trucks and tractors. Henry Ford personally signed their dealership contract. Opening in 1916, the Cooper & Hostert Garage remained in business until the early 1970s.Image

This is the eighth mural in the Chicago Southland. The villages of Mokena, New Lenox, Frankfort, Matteson, Park Forest, University Park, Lynwood, and Sauk Village all now have murals installed in their communities. Chicago Heights will receive their mural soon. Every mural is a hand-painted, unique work of art.  Upon completion, the 35-mural series will be one of the largest works of public art in the country.

The murals are each valued at $10,000, and are financed through a National Scenic Byway Grant from the Federal Highway Administration and an Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Office of Tourism, Tourism Attraction Development Grant.

As the designated Scenic Byway management agency overseeing the Lincoln Highway National Scenic Byway, the Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition (ILHC) continues to seek ways to recognize the significance of the highway and make stories of the highway come alive for visitors.  The Chicago Southland Convention & Visitors Bureau is the local ILHC partner and works to promote ILHC’s attractions within the Chicago Southland.
